What is a lactation consultant?
Lactation consultants — most carry IBCLC certification, the international gold standard — are trained to assess the full picture of breastfeeding: anatomy, milk production, infant feeding patterns, and maternal health. They watch a full feeding, identify what's going wrong, and give you a concrete plan. They're not a substitute for your pediatrician or nurse. They specialize in the one thing those providers rarely have time to address in depth: how breastfeeding is actually going.
When to hire one
Immediately if breastfeeding is painful, your baby isn't gaining weight as expected, or your milk supply feels off. Some families book a prenatal session in the third trimester to prepare — particularly useful if you have anatomical concerns or a previous difficult experience. The first two weeks are the highest-leverage window. Problems addressed early rarely compound.
- A latch that hurts or never settles
- Milk supply concerns — too low or oversupply
- A baby who falls asleep at the breast before finishing a feed
- Nipple pain, cracking, or early signs of mastitis
- Pumping while returning to work
- Transitioning from bottle back to breast

Frequently asked questions
- How much does a lactation consultant cost in Israel?
- Most IBCLC home visits run between ₪400 and ₪900 per session, depending on location and whether follow-up is included. Some health funds (kupot holim) offer partial coverage — worth checking with your kupah before booking.
- Is a prenatal session worth it?
- For most families, no. For families with anatomical concerns (inverted nipples, breast surgery history) or a previous breastfeeding difficulty, a single prenatal session can prevent a lot of early stress.
- Can they help with pumping and bottle feeding?
- Yes. Lactation consultants work across the full feeding picture — breast, bottle, and pump. If you're returning to work or supplementing, they help you build a sustainable routine.
- Do they make house calls?
- Most do. Each consultant's profile shows their availability — home visit, clinic, or virtual — so you can filter for what works.
- What if I've already decided to stop breastfeeding?
- A lactation consultant can help you wean safely and comfortably, managing engorgement and reducing supply gradually.
